Is an artificial eye made of glass?

Prior to World War II artificial eyes were supplied by Germany and were made of glass in stock forms. After World War II the Navy commissioned a dental team to create a new type of custom eye. It was based on dental technique which used plastic cast impression fit eyes.

 

How soon after surgery can I be fit?

The typical wait time is 6-8 weeks. This may vary depending on your surgery. 

 

Does insurance cover a prosthesis?

Policies vary widely. Typically artificial eyes are covered under Durable Medical Equipment. You can check your policy details or ask your insurance company for benefit information. We are happy to answer specifics with your benefit information

 

How long does it take?

Scheduling is tailored to fit your needs. Treatment is divided into History and Treatment Plan, Impression, Wax Fitting, Iris Coloring, Fabrication, and Delivery. 

 

How do I care for my new eye?

Most ocularists recommend six month polishing appointments to resurface, remove buildup and small surface scratches, as well as thoroughly clean your prosthesis. Typically eyes are replaced every five to seven years. 

 

How much do artificial eyes cost?

Usually between $2500 to $8500, depending on the type of prosthesis needed, your insurance coverage, and your location.

 

Can I still wear makeup?

Yes, makeup can enhance the appearance of your eye. You may want to consider a trifold mirror with close up option. Some patients find permanent makeup to be easier to maintain

Does the impression hurt?

Impressions are made with either alginate or silicone and can cause some irritation, which is quickly resolved within 24 hours normally.
